O Roncudo Lighthouse and the Barnacle Gatherers
The name of this Lighthouse is attributed to the hoarse sound produced by the waves crashing against the rocks of the Cape. The Roncudo Lighthouse served to guide ships in their voyage through these treacherous waters. Also the barnacle of these cliffs has a well-deserved worldwide fame for its taste and size, in addition to the artisanal extraction techniques that has been used the female gatherers (percebeiras), risking their lives to bring to our tables a culinary delicacy of special quality. A noteworthy feature in this zone are the white crosses that watch the sea in memory of the gatherers who died while they worked gathering the barnacles as an example of their heroic and dangerous craft.
