Located on a rocky mound between the Eume and Sesin rivers, in Fraga do Eume, a incomparable beauty place, this monastery rises up. It underwent numerous interventions throughout its history. Its origins date from the tenth century when the first news of the existence of monastic life in this place are known. The history of Caaveiro is linked to S. Rosendo and belonged to S. Bieito Order, and later it was a S. Agustín monastery.

It is a set of buildings, some already missing: Main Church, Church of Santa Isabel, cells, cabildo, sacristy, well, warehouses, archive, belfry, etc.

In the Natural Park of the Fragas do Eume the use of private vehicles is restricted during Easter and the summer months. Given the high volume of visitors in this period to both the Natural Park and the Monastery of Caaveiro, the Deputación de A Coruña, in collaboration with the Consellería de Medio Ambiente e Ordenación do Territorio - Department of Environment and Spatial Planning - (nature conservation service), has been providing a visitors transport service by buses between the Center of Interpretation of the Natural Park and the Bridge of Caaveiro.

The Deputación de A Coruña and the Town Councils where the Fragas do Eume and the Natural Park are located are carrying out various actions for the enhancement of this Natural Park, where the Monastery of Caaveiro is located. In this sense, the Deputación, in collaboration with the Town Councils and the Xunta de Galicia (Nature Conservation Service), wants to facilitate access to the Fragas and the Monastery and offers various alternatives to the visitor, in addition to the entrance to the Natural Park through Pontedeume, especially to those visitors who make small hiking routes through the interior of the Natural Park. These routes also highlight the Portal de A Capela (built and financed with funds from the Deputación) and the Portal de Monfero, as this access offers magnificent tourist possibilities and enhances an area of great natural, landscape and ethnographic values.
